Network communications and capture basics + DNS protocol decoding and troubleshooting

Next sessions : 20/03/2018 - 29/05/2018 - 25/09/2018

Many organizations use monitoring and troubleshooting tools but few of them are really able to take all benefits from these solutions.
The reason is quite simple: a tool that is able to automatically troubleshoot complex performance degradation problems does not exist. Nothing will ever replace the human expertise that is required to interpret the information provided by such monitoring platforms.
A detailed transactional analysis of performance degradation problems is only possible if there is an understanding of network protocols in place.
This training focuses on the basics of network communications and analyses the DNS protocol in details.

This training aims to help participants acquire the necessary basic technical knowledge about network based communications and DNS protocol. It will enable them to get a good understanding of network communications principles as well as network traffic capture methods. It will also help them troubleshoot DNS related performance degradations.

This 1 day training is organized as follows :
• General concepts
o OSI and TCP/IP communication models ;
o Methods/Principles of network traffic capture ;
o Basic principles of Wireshark.
• DNS protocol
o DNS in the TCP/IP model ;
o DNS definition ;
o DNS usage ;
o DNS components ;
o Recursive vs iterative query process ;
o Typical Wireshark capture and display filters ;
o DNS query and response structure ;
• Hands-on labs on DNS protocol.

The participants should be familiar with the general networking concepts but no specific skill is required to participate to this training.
Each participant has to bring his/her laptop with the free Wireshark tool installed.
